It has often been said that what grows together goes together, a simple phrase that implies that the cuisines of a certain region, are best enjoyed with the wines from that exact same region. Boeuf Bourguignon is best served with red Burgundy (Pinot Noir), Tuscan Chiana steak or fagioli con salsiccia (beans with sausage) are best served with Chianti Classico or Brunello di Montalcino. Spanish Manchego cheese and Iberico ham come alive with a cold glass of Manzanilla Sherry.

There’s no reason you can’t experience these culinary adventures at home. Join Jessica Dupuy, sommelier, wine writer, and cookbook author for a deep dive into the regional flavors of iconic wine regions around the world. Learn more about the wines, the grapes from which they’re made, and ways to find them to enjoy at home.

This class offers a special glimpse into the Alentejo region of Portugal, a small area not much larger than the size of Delaware in the southeastern part of the country just east of Lisbon. Blanketed with a warm, dry, rocky landscape that looks almost identical to the Texas Hill Country, Alentejo food and wine strikes a balance between hearty rustic fare and fresh seafood with light, stony, citrus-toned white wines and bold, robust red wines.

Portugal makes dozens of different kinds of wine from an array of little-known grapes. Though the grapes are lesser known varieties such as Alicante Bouschet, Aragonez (otherwise known as Tempranillo), Antão Vaz, and Arinto, you’ll no doubt be well-versed in the flavors of this unique region by night’s end.
